Exercise 1 (25 points)
Researchers are interested in exploring if there is an association between obesity and RER (Respiratory Exchange Ratio).
In the accompanying Excel file and under the sheet “Obesity “, Table 1 provides the responses of the 18 participants in the study and Table 2 summarizes their responses.
Based on the provided table, is obesity associated with a RER greater than 1.1? Answer this question making sure that you show the following:
State the Null and Alternative Hypotheses.
Which test statistic would you use and what is the observed value?
What conclusion would you reach and why?
Exercise 2 (25 points)
A consulting firm conducted a survey asking the CEOs of 58 companies about their plans for employee hiring or firing in the following year. In the respective question (categorical variable) “What are your plans in terms of hiring or firing employees in the next year?”, the available responses were:
– The company plans to hire and add to the number of employees, or
– The company plans no change in the number of employees , or
– The company plans to reduce the number of employees by proceeding with layoffs.
In another question (categorical variable as well), the CEOs were asked to designate whether their company was private or public.
In the accompanying Excel file and under the sheet “Employment Plan”, Table 1 summarizes the responses of the CEOs in regard to the above two variables.
Conduct a hypothesis test to determine whether there is a relationship between employment plans for the next year and type of company. What is your conclusion?
