The target length of the final paper will be 8 double-spaced pages. The goal of this paper is twofold. First, you will develop a teaching intervention that will target a particular concept or a particular theoretical understanding in any STEM subdomain. Second, you will propose a way to test the effectiveness of the intervention. For example, you can develop an intervention designed to teach children or adolescents about fractions or equivalence or density or something else. You can choose from the topics we cover in this class, or you can choose a different topic. Importantly, however, whichever topic you choose, the intervention that you will design should be developed on the basis of what we know about the cognitive and motivational mechanisms involved in the construction of the concept/ theoretical understanding.
As a second step, you will develop a way to test the effectiveness of the intervention. While doing so, you should think carefully about how you will measure the relevant constructs (e.g., children’s mastery of the concepts), as well as about the design of the study (e.g., what will be your control group; how will the intervention be carried out, etc.).
