Paper details
Following our readings and discussions of the ways in which the English language has changed over time—especially due to the needs, changes, interactions, and realities of its speakers within various communities—you will write an essay that is framed around your inclusion in a particular community, subculture, or organization. Your paper should focus on analyzing how your language and style of communication have been shaped by the community, its purposes, and its goals. In other words, think about the “unwritten rules” of communicating (verbally, nonverbally, written, etc.) within a certain community, organization, or subculture and how this helps carry out the group’s purposes as well as reinforce your role within the group.

Your paper should focus on analyzing how your language and style of communication have been shaped by the community, its purposes, and its goals. PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT In keeping with the goals of English 101, this assignment will ask you to examine language-use and communication processes as they are shaped by communities as well as social and cultural factors.

This process will deepen your understanding of how you have been influenced by various communities, cultures, and contexts, while also highlighting the fact that you already practice code-switching and code-mixing, which can be viewed as a kind of rhetorical flexibility. AUDIENCE In addition to myself (as your English 101 instructor), you should consider your peers and classmates as a secondary audience. Some of us may have similar backgrounds as you do, but most will not. Do not assume that we, your audience, know anything regarding your subject. Avoid under-explaining. EXAMPLE COMMUNITIES • Work communities (healthcare, restaurant service, military service, etc.) • Language communities (Black English, Spanglish, Vietnamese, etc.) • Racial and/or ethnic communities (Jewish, Cherokee, Latinx, etc.) • Identity-based communities (LGBT+/queer, disabled, conservative, etc.) • Social communities (Scouts, FFA, Greek life, etc.) • Interest communities (film subreddit, forums, school organizations, etc.) • Online communities (K-pop Twitter, a Facebook group, PlantTok, etc.) • Leisure communities (online gaming, hiking group, chess, etc.) TIPS & TRICKS • Provide context regarding the community—its goals, how it functions, its participants, its core values/beliefs, its formation, etc.

• Establish a clear focus and maintain it throughout the essay. Outlining your points beforehand helps ensure that your ideas are logically connected. • Ensure that the main idea or thesis makes some connection between the community’s language use (specific vocabulary, gestures, dress, etc.); the shared goals, values, and beliefs of the community; as well as a member’s ability to carry out their goals. • Consider how the language unites or separates the community, how the language helps individuals in the group identify themselves, how language helps form/maintain the hierarchies within the group, etc. • Include examples of the use of language and the types of communication in the community (including nonverbal communication), followed by analysis of what this language use tells us about how the community functions or about the relationships among community members. • When drafting, make a list of key terms, specialized words, jargon, colloquial language, abbreviations, or acronyms that are used by members in the groups.

Discuss the words or phrases members of the group share that are not used the same way by those outside of the group. • Define the terms that you provide as examples and effectively discuss the history and/or significance of said terms.
