1. We’ve talked about the role of the IRB. We noted that any institution that is subject to federal regulations, including those seeking funding for studies, must maintain and IRB that must review and approve research to ensure ethical guidelines are adhered (esp. as related to research with human participants). (McBride, 2020) There are exceptions to this. What types of studies are exempted? Are they exempt from everything or are there just modifications to the full-review process?
2. McBride (2020) reviewed the history of the development of ethics and ethical codes. One of the landmark studies was the work by Stanley Milgram. His investigation attempted to examine the effect of an authority figure on participants’ behavior. Why was he able to conduct the study at that time? Why is it considered a “landmark” research project? What did we learn from it and why is that important today?
